Black Widow Habits:
Black widow spiders are one of the most notorious spider species in the world. Adults are black or dark brown in color and typically have a bright red hourglass-shaped mark on their abdomens. These spiders lurk in undisturbed and dark places and usually build tangled, messy webs. Although black widows are loathed due to their potentially lethal venom, they rarely bite humans and often shy away from contact with us.
Risks:
With their black bodies and red hourglass shapes, Black Widow’s are intimidating to look at and can turn deadly if you find yourself too close to one. Although they are small in size (only 1-3 cm long) black widow spiders can cause some serious health risks: from minor symptoms like headaches and nausea to blisters, fever, abdominal cramps, and blood in stool or urine.
Bites:
Bites from black widow spiders can be extremely painful, with symptoms such as severe abdominal cramps, aching, fever and sweating. Fortunately, though not pleasant to encounter or think about, black widow spider bites are usually no more serious than a bad reaction.
Prevention:
To prevent black widow spiders from entering your home or yard, be sure to seal off any openings and make sure all of your window screens fit properly. Additionally, try to clear out webs or eggs if spotted and pay attention when handling firewood or other objects found in areas they may reside. Taking a few extra precautions can help lower the risk of encountering black widow spiders tremendously.
Removal:
If you find black widow spiders in or around your home, it is important to contact a professional removal service right away as they can provide safe and effective solutions. Black Widow spiders can be especially hazardous to children and pets, so it's important to take action as soon as possible should one be spotted on your property.
