Rochester’s Mouse Scene
Hello, friends of Rochester Pest Pro. It’s March and chilly outside, so we’re doing lots of pest control for mice in the Rochester, Pittsford, Fairport, and Henrietta neighborhoods. We’ve talked about why Rochester deals with mice, a mouse's life cycle, feeding habits, and today it’s time to talk about what a Rochester mouse’s favorite habitats are.
Indoor Mice
The most common indoor mouse in Rochester is Mus musculus domesticus, the house mouse. Small, brown, and about the size of an egg or smaller, house mice love to live in our homes and offices where it is warm and there is plenty of food. House mice do not hibernate and can breed all year long, so they need to stay close to shelter and food.
They’re most often found in walls, ceilings, and attics. By the time they become obvious, the infestation is well underway. Call us right away if you suspect mice in your home and/or office.
Outdoor Mice
Rochester mice that prefer to live outdoors include Peromyscus leucopus, the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus, the deer mouse, and Apodemus sylvaticus, the wood or field mouse.
Rochester’s outdoor mice prefer to live in dry areas with plenty of brush cover where they can nest inside bushes, stumps, hollows, and root structures. Outdoor structures like barns, sheds, and warehouses are also susceptible to mouse infestations. These mice don’t like to be around humans but will invade homes and offices if it gets cold enough. Mice are a particular problem in Western New York’s vacation homes.
Mice in big cities and areas with high human population density are evolving to adapt better to their environment. Some of these changes are being able to digest more varieties of human foods that are high in fats and refined sugar. It is extremely important to rely on pest control professionals to keep high-population areas safe from pathogens spread by mice. Mice also cause structural damage like nesting in building materials and chewing electrical wires, which can cause fires.
