Rochester Pest Pro is open for business by appointment for exterior sprays. When the danger from the pandemic passes, we will return to our indoor services. In the meantime, we’d like to help our friends by talking about what you can look for indoors while you’re spending more time inside. Also, check out our post on identifying outdoor pests.
Preventive maintenance is very important for keeping your home or business safe and comfortable, and knowing how to identify signs of pests will also help your pest control professional help you. If you’re looking for a house or apartment, this is the time to inform yourself so that you don’t move into a place that already has its own residents.
Common Springtime Pests
- Carpenter ants. These are the large black ants with round segments, usually seen alone.
- Spiders. Though they may creep us out, try your best to put them outside or leave them alone. If you’re not sure whether or not a spider is dangerous, don’t touch- call your pest pro instead.
- Houseflies. Houseflies are annoying and they soil your environment by eating and laying eggs in food.
- Bees and wasps. Be very careful and do not attempt to remove or eradicate bees and wasps yourself! Prevention is best, but otherwise a pro needs to handle them.
Signs of Household pests
The most obvious sign of indoor pests is seeing them, but you may notice other things first. Here are a few:
- Carpenter ants like to be inside walls, so check for drywall powder and sawdust, and rustling sounds inside walls and hollow places.
- Most spiders, as we know, build webs, so check for new webs. Egg sacs are often hidden under furniture and in dark corners.
- Houseflies are very visible, but you can also detect them by checking for their droppings (they look like black dots) and checking any rubbish or decaying materials for maggots.
- Bees and wasps. The best way to detect them is to listen for humming sounds inside walls, attics, and crawl spaces. Do not investigate further, but call your pest professional.
